Employing the Cellunator and Fiberzymes together, today's corn ethanol plants can produce cellulosic ethanol. Corn kernels contain from 6% to 7% cellulosic fiber. This fiber is currently unprocessed by bio-refiners and is passed though the plant as an undesirable component of DDGS (animal feed).
Cellulosic fibers, which are liberated by the Cellunator, are converted into fermentable sugars by the Fiberzymes cocktail. The end result is not only a 5% increase in yield, but also millions of gallons of cellulosic ethanol that may qualify for advance RIN fuel credits. Fiberzymes will be commercial in late 2011.
